Great Expectations Board of Directors

School Board Members

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS

Due to a change in Minnesota law, the Great Expectations School Board will hold elections during our regularly scheduled May14th Board meeting, at 4:00 PM.

Candidates:

Suzy Schweig: Educator seat. 2 year term

Suzy moved to Grand Marais from St. Louis, Missouri 25 years ago and quickly found community among a group of parents working to start what would become Great Expectations School. That early connection sparked a lasting commitment to the school and its mission.

Suzy brings 38 years of experience in education, including 14 years teaching at a progressive independent school prior to moving north and 24 years at GES. In addition to her work in the classroom, she spent 11 years as a wilderness ranger in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, an experience that continues to shape her appreciation for this beautiful region.

Suzy is seeking to return to the GES Board after several years away because she cares deeply about the continued success of the school and the strong relationships that make it such a special place. She believes a thriving school is built on connection, collaboration, and a shared commitment to students and families.

Mazzy Flynn: Community Member seat. 3 year term

Mazzy moved to Grand Marais from Bellingham WA in 2021, and has spent time in Cook County at Camp Menogyn, NHFS, the GM Library and most recently, 2 years as a GES Paraprofessional. She enjoys working with kids and art, and looks forward to guiding the school in the capacity of a GES Board Member.

Serving on the School Board is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the school’s policies, budget, and operations. The Board meets twice per month from 4:00–6:00 PM:

  • First Thursday: Workshop meeting for planning and discussion

  • Third Thursday: Board meeting for decision-making and action items

If you know a community member, previous GES parent, or grandparent who may be interested in a community board member seat, please encourage them to join us! Likewise, if you are interested in becoming a parent board member, feel free to contact Board Chair Joe Drotos at joe.drotos@greatexpectationsschool.com for more information.

While we will still hold our annual meeting in the fall, there will be no board elections at that time.

Please join us on May 14th to vote and be part of this important process!
