Telling Stories in Song

Local artist Tim Haussner joined us for all-school morning meeting this Friday to perform The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.   The students have been learning about Minnesota history and how many ancient cultures conveyed information in songs and stories.  The connection to modern educational theories including Multiple Intelligence was clearly demonstrated when Tim asked the students, “How many times did the church bells ring?” and nearly every student raised their hand. Thank You for Your Help!

Thank you Angie Works for preparing our Peanut Butter and Jelly lunch on Monday!  This week our regular volunteers included Patty Johnson, Phyllis Olson, Chris Callender, Lyle Gerard and Walt McCarthy.  Mike and Karina Roth once again teamed up to serve a Pizza lunch on Friday.  If you are looking for ways to help the school out, please contact Patsy!

Who’s Who at GES:

This week meet:

Melissa Oberg

Melissa has been a member the fabulous Great Expectation’s paraprofessional staff for four years.  She works primarily in the Fawns classroom.  Her first professional experience with children came from working as a summer camp counselor.  Not surprising, as her favorite place to be is outside, either camping, canoeing, hiking or playing sports, especially softball.  (She also has a hidden talent for football!)  Her favorite season of fall allows her to be in the great outdoors in the crisp, cool air.  She is not afraid, however, to spend at least a little time inside doing something few people know about her.  She loves to play video games!  She might also be caught inside watching her favorite movie, Ice Age.  Melissa hails from Circle Pines, MN, but has grandparents in Fort Meyers, FL whom she had the chance to visit last year.  She and her husband Kirk are also the proud parents of 1 year old Adam.

What’s Happening at GES:

Volunteers Needed!  We are still looking for volunteers to help proctor our state-mandated tests in April and May. Tests are conducted in the mornings only, and training will be provided.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Patsy for at 387-9322 or learn@GreatExpectationsSchool.com

Skiing Helmets Needed!  The Wolves and Otters are downhill skiing at Lutsen on Wed. March 10th.  We would like to be able to equip all students with helmets at minimal cost.  If you have one that you would be willing to let a student use for the day, please contact Patsy at 387-9322.  We could use adult size helmets as well.

Application Deadline for Fall of 2010 Approaching:  The application deadline for students wishing to attend Great Expectations next year is March 31, 3010.  Students who are currently enrolled are guaranteed a space next fall, and need not re-apply.  Siblings of current students need to turn in an application, and are then given first priority to open slots within the appropriate classroom.  If you know of anybody interested for next fall, please let them know about this important deadline!

What’s Happening in our Community:

Educational Website to Check Out:  WatchKnow.org is a directory of free educational videos for students ages 3 -18.  The site features more than 11,000 videos on such subjects as math, science, and history.  Featured videos originate from National Geographic, YouTube, and Google Videos, among others, and have been endorsed by educators from universities such as Harvard, Stanford and Brigham Young University
