For the week ending June 5, 2009

Photo of the Week

All Together Still

Developing community was an important initiative last fall when we undertook our first all-school trip to the beach.  Celebrating community was the goal this week when we once again trekked down to Lake Superior.  It was sunny, but with a chilly breeze as Reading Buddies met to reflect on their time together and everyone enjoyed lunch alfresco (very fresco!).  A strong sense of belonging is not only important for emotional health, it helps provide the foundation necessary for great student learning.

Thank You for Your Help!

There are many people to thank for the success of our Greenhouse Sale and Pancake Breakfast (more below), but we’d especially like to recognize the extraordinary effort Karina Roth put into coordinating the Greenhouse portion and also that of Scott Pollock who pulled together the Breakfast!

Thank you to Pete Gresczyk of G&G Septic, who once again provided a port-o-potty for the beach!

Thanks to the volunteers who made their regular visits this week: Chris Callender and Walt McCarthy.

And thank you to Karina and Mike Roth for providing this week’s Community Lunch – mini pizzas!

What’s Happening:

Greenhouse Sale & Pancake Breakfast a HUGE Success: Last Saturday saw great crowds of people with armloads of plants and platefuls of pancakes as the community came out to support the GES fundraiser.  Thanks to all the volunteers whose efforts contributed to our success:  Lynn Abrahamson, Bret Berka, Karen Blackburn, Kristin Blomberg, Maria Callender, Amy Henrikson, Sara Hingos, Scott Pollock, Karina & Mike Roth, and Kurt & Natalie Sobanja.  We also want to recognize Bob Lametry, who once again donated the use of his griddle – and expertise – in support of the students.

Major Remodeling Project This Summer: We will be creating a loft over the library area, adding a classroom, and re-configuring the Great Room as part of a remodeling project this summer.  While we will be contracting most of the work, we could use all the volunteer help we can get for two major activities.  First, we have a work day scheduled Saturday, June 13th to prepare for the construction work.  This will require dismantling/moving much of our furniture and packing up most of our supplies.  Second, we will be having a cleaning/painting weekend after construction is completed.  The exact date will be scheduled later, but we expect it to be near the end of July or beginning of August.  Please consider helping out at either or both of these events. Many hands make light work (and save money)!

Fall Calendar and Summer Hours:  We have attached a preliminary calendar for the next school year.  Classes begin on Monday, September 8th.  Staff will be in throughout the summer, but not keeping specific hours, so please use 387-2944 to reach Peter James at home for urgent items.

Important Calendar Reminders (please call the school with any questions):

School Board Meeting June 9th:  Public input welcome at 3:30; business meeting begins at 4:00.

Porfolio Night 6/9: Join us for a night celebrating the year, as we review portfolios of student work.

Graduation 6/10: Join us at 11:00 on Wednesday, June 10th to celebrate this year’s graduation.

Last Day of School June 11th – EARLY DISMISSAL:  Students will be dismissed at 11:10.  Buses will be running 4 hours earlier than usual.  All student personal items must go home for the summer.

Work Day Saturday, June 13th:  We need several hands to help, any time between 8:00 and 4:00.
