December 8, 2004
Approved Minutes
In Attendance: Suzy Schweig, Patty Nordahl, Kathryn Nelson-Pedersen, Susan Miller, Alan Stone, Barbara Nagle, Nina Simonowicz, Tom Resek and Amy Brown

4:00 p.m. Call to Order
Reading of the Mission: Alan Stone
Approval of Agenda: Nina Simonowicz moved to approve the agenda. Alan Stone seconded. Ayes all.
Approval of Minutes
Suzy moved to approve the minutes from the November 30, 2004 meeting. Patty Nordahl seconded. Ayes all. Correction to spelling of Kathryn’s name.
New business
Ilena Berg talked about having the middle school students participate in a regional science fair at the end of February in Duluth. She will get more information and begin communicating with students and parents. There also will be a science quiz bowl on a Saturday in early February for middle school age students. More information about this will be available soon.
After a brief discussion, Nina made a motion to follow the same emergency school closing practice as that of ISD-166. Suzy Schweig seconded. Ayes all.
Old business
Audubon trip details were discussed. The trip is scheduled for Feb. 14 – 16, 2005
There was some continuing discussion about recess time and Tom Resek asked board and staff members to offer any suggestions so they could be incorporated into a planning session he will hold with parent volunteers.
Strategic planning
Barb suggested each board member take 5 minutes to identify on post-it notes, several key issues facing GES. Following the brief exercise the board reviewed and discussed each identified issue.
Following the brainstorming, several key issue areas were prioritized and individual board members volunteered to lead the school’s approach to those issues. The issues are:

Review of applications received for several position openings -- interviews are in process.
Hot lunch on 12/14
Parent/teacher conference will be held the week of 12/13
