Special School Board Meeting Minutes

In Attendance:

Board :: Barb Nagle, Suzy Schweig, Nina Simonowicz, Tom Dwyer, Patty Nordahl

3:05 Call to Order

by Barb Nagle
Welcome, and reading of mission by Nina Simonowicz.

3:07 Approval of Agenda

Motion: Tom Dwyer moved to approve agenda; Patty Nordahl seconded; ayes all.

3:08 Approval of Minutes

Motion: Tom Dwyer moved to approve April 7 minutes; Nina Simonowicz seconded; ayes all.

3:10 Treasurer's Report

Treasurer Tom Dwyer distributed a financial report showing $124,314 in the GES federal grant still available (out of an original total of $140,000). He also reported that all but a very small amount of the $10,000 Walton grant received earlier in the year had been spent.
Motion: Nina Simonowicz moved to approve the treasurer's report; Suzy Schweig seconded; ayes all.

3:25 Committee Report

1) Enrollment (Nina Simonowicz)
Nina presented a job description for enrollment committee members.

2) Policies (Patty Nordahl)
Patty discussed the creation of a dress code for GES and said she would
seek parent and student input.

3) Facility & Grounds (Tom Dwyer)
Tom said he hoped to have a report at the next board meeting (May 27).

4) Personnel (Deb Dwyer, Suzy Schweig)
Deb presented a job description for the Administrative Assistant position. Asked for board review and response by May 23. Also discussed was the development of an At-Will employment agreement. The board also discussed the Special Ed position.

Curriculum Coordinator Report (Suzy Schweig)

Interim Director Report (Deb Dwyer)
Deb reported on state legislative activity and its possible impact on ISD #4100 (GES).
GES is establishing a new Post Office Box number -- #310 to accommodate an increased volume of mail.
Deb also reported on a variety of grant applications and their status.
GES is awaiting response on some insurance questions.

4:40 New Business

The board reviewed a new 2003-2004 school year calendar that allows additional time for teachers to meet with parents.
Motion: Suzy Schweig moved to approve the revised school year calendar; Patty Nordahl seconded; ayes all.

4:50 Announcements

Barb Nagle volunteered to help plan the June family event for GES parents and students. She will seek volunteers.
Suzy presented information about Responsive Classroom training. A five-day workshop session will be held in the Twin Cities from July 14 to 18. GES plans to have all four teachers attend this session, if possible.
The board also discussed other workshops and training sessions, including a MN Department of Education session in July and will prioritize the importance of these meetings.

Next meeting is Tuesday, May 27, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Community Center in Grand Marais.
