School Board Meeting Minutes

4:05 Call to Order

by Suzy Schweig
Welcome; and reading of mission by Patty Nordahl.

Motion: Nina Simonowicz moved to approve agenda; Patty Nordahl seconded; ayes all.

4:08 Approval of Minutes

Motion: Nina Simonowicz moved to approve the July 21st minutes; Patty Nordahl seconded; ayes all.

Tom reported that a work continues on the permanent site.


4:10 Old Business


Transitional Executive Director Report (Deb Dwyer)
Deb reported on a very busy week which included:
:: finding an auditor;
:: reporting that the one planned event in September in the Community Center has been cancelled, so after the County Fair we will not have to move anything from the arena until our lease is up;
:: half of the Fisherman's Picnic volunteer slots are filled; and,
:: loads of details are being worked out.

Curriculum Coordinator Report (Suzy Schweig)
Suzy had a very busy week as well and discussed the Math currciculum and Intake conferences.

Opening Day Tasks (Nina Simonowicz)
Nina facilitated a discussion identifying tasks to be completed by Opening Day. The board noted the following:
FACILITY
:: Need to organize a move-in crew for Saturday, August 16th (Nina & Patty - staff will be there)
:: Need to acquire banner signage (Nina)
:: Need to acquire opening day balloons, etc (Barb)
:: Need to solicit someone to drive to Duluth and shop/pick-up last minute items on Sun, Aug 17th (Nina)

:: Order the Special Ed Assessments (Deb)

6:00 New Business

Transportation (Nina Simonowicz)
Nina reported on efforts between she and Deb to offer a 2-bus transportation plan. Policies (Patty Nordahl)
Patty reivewed the following policies with the board: 102 EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY (okay), 205 OPEN MEETINGS AND CLOSED MEETINGS (okay), and 206 PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS/COMPLAINTS ABOUT PERSONS AT SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS AND DATA PRIVACY CONSIDERATIONS (questions for our legal counsel).
Patty will email out a new mandated policy for board review and action.

6:25 Announcements

August meetings are
Monday, August 4, 4-5:30pm at the Community Center in Grand Marais, and
Monday, August 25, 4-5:30pm at the Community Center in Grand Marais. The 1st August Family Gathering is the Opening Day Continental Breakfast on Monday, August 18 at school/CC Cmty Center from 7:45 am - 8:15 am. The 2nd August Family Gathering is the Campground Community Potluck Lunch on Friday, Aug 29. Details forthcoming. Deb will be available for Q&A for interested families after moving on Sat, Aug 16 from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
