School Board Meeting Minutes

Approval of Agenda

Motion: Nina Simonowicz moved to approve the agenda. David Parsons seconded. Ayes all.

New Business

Inclusive Education Plan
Patty Nordahl is working on the Inclusive Education Plan due by May 15. Kathryn Nelson Pederson will help Patty with the development of the plan. The plan is to show how the school has incorporated social, civil, racial and equal rights laws required for schools.

Pow-Wow
GES has been invited to the Grand Portage Pow-Wow on Thursday, May 6. There will be funds for bus transportation to this field trip. Kari Merritt will be in charge of permission slips. Times and details will be worked out ASAP.

Old Business

Calendar Update
The draft calendar needs in service days added. Half days scheduled into the calendar were to allow for conferences. Financial implications of half days for the school needs to be looked into.

Personnel
Doug Gale will be giving notice of resignation due to a full time job opportunity.
Lisa Foster was hired as Overall Maps Coordinator and Project Manager.
Donna Melich has been hired to clean M, W, F. Kari Merritt will be point person for Donna to go to.

Enrollment
K-2 :: 5 students
3-5:: 16 students
6-8 :: 18 students FULL
9 :: 3 students

These numbers do not include the Birch Grove applicants.
David Parsons will contact Lauri Davis to develop pre-K info distribution for GES

Progress Report Update
Scheduling a day off for the educators to write progress reports needs to be added to the calendar. Substitute teachers will be looked into for covering this day.
Rod Haenke and Suzy Schweig met to discuss Progress Reports and how to break it down to segments that parents could relate to. A future meeting with Rod will happen sometime in Learning Block 5 to continue to work with the educators on Progress Reports. Rod Haenke is developing a proposal as a consultant for GES for curriculum mapping, extensive progress report development, coordinating advisors, etc.

Physical Education
Tennis Association is willing to work with GES on a tennis program. GES needs approval to use tennis courts from ISD 166. Upon approval of court use, GES will need volunteers to help plan and implement the tennis program.

Ninth Grade
The Ninth Grade Committee has met and at this point needs a staff person who will be working with ninth grade for future meetings. A tracking system needs to be developed to account for electives for ninth grade. GES would like Rod Haenke to consult on ninth grade development.

Director Position
David Parsons will be the point person for hiring a Director. Suzy Schweig also will be involved. The director job description will be advertised as soon as the final draft has been updated. Ideal start date for director will be in June.

Educator Report
Caroline Jones met with Amy Brown and suggested starting a pre-K/K grouping. She advised for the future that GES develop a peer group for K's. She also advised that ideal groupings for grades be K, 1-3, 4-5 or 4-6.

Finance
Karen Blackburn's responsibilities may be expanded in bookkeeping area.
Kelley Sommers would approve Para time cards and Transportation Person would approve bus drivers time cards.

Facility
Concern was discussed regarding safety and liability of the students' forts. Deb Dwyer will head a parent group to clean up the woods around the school to make it more safe.

Transportation
Nina Simonowicz will no longer be the head of transportation. Transportation Chair responsibilities in the short run include scheduling of bus drivers, maintenance scheduling, break down back up plans, daily maintenance issues and meeting with MNDOT. David Parsons will contact Glen Hellner to inquire about taking over the Transportation Chair. David Parsons will also be a part of the MNDOT meeting next Thursday. David will discuss with Kari Merritt the additional transportation responsibilities the office will take over.
