GES Board Meeting

May 12, 2004

Approved Minutes

 

 

In Attendance: Suzy Schweig, Alan Stone, Barbara Nagle, Nina Simonowicz, Patty Nordahl, Amy Brown, David Parsons

Others Present:  Kathryn Nelson-Pederson, Terry Nagle, Bev Miller, Nora Livesay, Gina Todd

 

4:05 Call to Order

 

Approval of Agenda

Nina Simonowicz moved to approve the agenda. Alan Stone seconded. Ayes all. Additions to agenda included a report on web site design and a review of the school calendar.

 

Approval of Minutes

Suzy Schweig moved to approve the minutes from April 7, 19 and 29 with typographical corrections. Nina seconded. Ayes all.

 

Old Business

Patty Nordahl asked for final suggestions to the Inclusiveness plan.  It must be submitted to the state by the end of the week.  Nora Livesay noted language to more fully reflect Native American culture in the plan.  Bev Miller suggested the plan include education on gay, lesbian and transgender issues.  Additional suggestions from committee members also will be included.

 

Nina Simonowicz   moved that the board is the acting curriculum advisory committee.  Alan Stone seconded. Ayes all.

 

Patty Nordahl moved that the Inclusiveness Education Plan be submitted to the state.  Suzy Schweig seconded. Ayes all.

 

Nora Livesay discussed the formation of a Native Culture committee, including members from Grand Portage, to more fully explore American Indian history, culture and language  using local resources and expertise.  Will work closely with teachers and hope to begin implementation at the start of the new school year.

 

Patty Nordahl moved that the school establish a Native Culture committee and that Nora chair this committee.  Amy Brown seconded.  Ayes all.

 

Nora said she has worked on a web page design for the school and is now looking for board input.  Following initial input from the board, all parents will be asked for their ideas and suggestions.

 

Treasurer’s Report

 

Nina presented a list of bills for payment and moved their payment.  Patty Nordahl seconded. Ayes all.

 

Nina reviewed the operating budget and status on the federal budget. 

 

Educator’s Report

Suzy Schweig reported on the upcoming MAPs testing which will begin on May 17. This test – last taken in Fall 2003 – is designed to determine student progress.  Educators will use results as part of their reporting back to parents. Progress reports will go to parents on June 4. 

GES will be signing an agreement with the Minnesota Association of Charter Schools to guide the school teaching staff in developing classroom goals, create curriculum-based assessments and other activities.

Suzy reviewed the school calendar for the new year.  171 student days.

Nina moved to approve the 2004-05 student calendar contingent on state approval. Alan seconded. Ayes all.

Suzy also noted that many students, at various times of the year, have to leave early to participate in extracurricular activities.  Patty made a motion to end the school day at 3:15 p.m. in the new school year.  Alan seconded. Ayes all.

 

Committee Reports

David Parsons reported on transportation.  We are looking for an additional, regular bus driver and would like to establish a system to use the same bus driver for each route.  David also discussed the soccer program.

Barbara Nagle reported on the food committee.  Volunteers are coming forward and the lunch program will be re-initiated the week of May 17.

Barb handed-out the school director job description and asked for board input.

Nina reviewed a budget worksheet for the 04/05 school year.

Alan reported on facility issues.  Grounds clean-up, maybe in conjunction with an end-of-the-year celebration.

 

New Business

Gina Todd has agreed to chair a Volunteer Coordinating committee and will be working with several other parents in helping to recruit parents for volunteer assignments, most immediately for kitchen help and recess.

 

Alan moved to adjourn the meeting. Suzy seconded.  Meeting adjourned at 7:15p.m.
